HAPPY HALLOWEEN...

Sadly this year I, once again, could not convince the children to have a theme when it came to costumes! Oh well there is always next year...

So this year Liliana wanted to be a snow princess, Ava of course wanted to be a fairy princess, and Dillon so desperately wanted to be Ironman (even before seeing the movie)! I (well Garrison too) was of course a pumpkin in a patch and Marc decided to be a blues brother. The reason his costume does not go with mine... Marc gets into the spirit of Halloween only a day or two before the actual Holiday. So unfortunately he didn't have enough time to be creative and pick something that would work with my costume!

Every year we typically eat dinner get the kids in their costumes and both Marc and I take the kids to the first few houses together. After the first few houses are done Marc goes back to the house to give out candy while I walk with the kids around the neighborhood. This year I was tempted to take the candy handing out job BUT decided I wanted to see them enjoy trick or treating more. My mother in law joined me on the walk. Papa would have came with us as well but he felt the need to be at his house and give out candy. Ava was by far the most excited about going "Tick or Teating"! She enjoyed herself last year but was belted in a stroller for her own safety and my own sanity. So this year was far more exciting because of the freedom she would have! Dillon was excited but wasn't into showing any of us how excited he was. Liliana of course is at that age where "Its on... how much candy can she get while out trick or treating". The night started at 6 pm and ended at 7pm . 1 Hour filled all 3 of their bags and they definately enjoyed themselves. I think Ava by far had the most fun. She was a brave soul as she went up to the candy bowls and stuck her hand in not once but twice and even sometimes more. If she didn't grab the candy she would hold her bag open until the person gave her more. It worked for her though! She got the most candy believe it or not. She walked the whole way and when it was time to go home she was VERY UNHAPPY! Dillon carried his bag over his shoulder and was in such a rush to get to the next house before finishing at the home before. Liliana was sorta in the same mode although she wanted to make sure I heard her using her manners and would even correct the younger two if they didn't say thank you! It was quite entertaining to see all of them trick or treating on their own. Not afraid of much and so excited by the smallest piece of candy! They all had a fun day/night. I hope everyone else had a fun night as well! HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Only 365 more days until Halloween again!

Preggo in a "Costume"

Ok so its about that time to update my preggo picture. I am now 7 months pregnant and growing by the day! I LOVE Halloween and think its so fun to dress up with the kids. So this year I decided to make a pumpkin shirt. My thought was my belly could be the pumpkin and I could sew on string and leaves to make it look like I was a pumpkin in a patch! Its nothing fancy but I am definately "in the spirit"! As you read in my previous post... every year it seems like more and more people (like Dillon's principal) are less into the "FUN" of the Holiday!!

So here I am (well and Garrison too)...
Once again not my best pictures in the world but you can definately see the belly and how big I am getting!

Dillon's Preschool Halloween Party...

Well I shouldn't call it a "party" since the horrible principal has banned all class parties. Typically in the past, grades pre-k thru 2nd were allowed to dress up and have class parties. Then the current principal came along... her first year she took away celebrating ALL of the holidays and gave the teachers permission to celebrate only 3 holidays...then last year she instructed the teachers that the 3 holidays they celebrated would NOT be in a "party atmosphere" but they could only have "themed learning centers". This year she decided that Kindergarten thru Second Grade would NOT be allowed to dress up. So literally when walking the kids to school this morning if didn't even feel like Halloween! It was quite depressing. Then 45 minutes later when it was time to take Dillon to school my spirits were lifted! Preschoolers were allowed to dress up (only reason why is because the preschool program is through the district meaning our horrible principal had ZERO say in deciding whether costumes would be worn). The kids were so excited to see each other all dressed up. It was just too cute! The first hour of school was their lesson plan for the day and then the second hour was when parents were allowed to come in. They had 4 centers set up, cookie decorating station, wrap the pop to look like a mummy, halloween bingo, and monster feet to walk with. Dillon LOVED the monster feet station. After the centers were completed the children cleaned up and sang us a Halloween song. It was a very fun afternoon for Dillon. As you can see he definately had a great day at school. I even convinced him to take a picture with his buddy Derik and his teacher Mrs. Jeana.

Pumpkin Carving...

As you all saw in a previous post, last weekend the kids picked out pumpkins. They painted their little personal ones but had to wait for Marc to find time to carve the big ones! Even though Marc changed jobs, he is still in retail, which translates to long hours during the busiest time of the year! So today he finally was able to make enough time to carve all 3 pumpkins with our VERY ANXIOUS kiddos!
All 3 pumpkins only took 1 hour to carve but when you look below at the pictures you will see why it didn't take very long at all!! I called him a "cheater" this year, but I can't blame him for wanting to be done with the carving... remember all 3 kids are still pretty young to be trusting with a knife!!

Yes that is a ROTOZIP in Marc's hand!!

St Jude's Trike-A-Thon...

Today was Dillon's day to not only ride his bike to school, but in school and during the Trike-A-Thon. He had to raise money in order to ride his bike. This was an event that only the preschool grade did to raise money for St Jude Children's Research Hospital. I was very proud to have him participate. They wanted the children to learn proper bike safety but also about children of different ages who are sick and need help getting better. I thought out of all the events Liliana has participated in (as far as school goes), this by far was the most meaningful. It wasn't just to raise money for the school it was to help children who are sick! What an AWESOME lesson in life to teach these kids at such a young age! KUDOS to the preschool program for doing this event and a BIG THANK YOU to those of you able to donate!

Pumpkin Craft Day...

Well once again I planned on a semi-busy Saturday for the kids. First we went to make our pumpkin craft at the local lowe's. It was a cute craft I must say... there was a cardboard pumpkin with holes for the eyes, nose, and mouth. Basically the kids had to hammer together the pieces to make different noses, eyes, and mouths! Then once home they had to paint the wood pieces.

When we were done with the pumpkin craft, Marc and I took the kids to a little pumpkin picking place to obviously pick out their pumpkins. We decided with Ava being so young still that letting them pick small pumpkins that they could then paint would be the best route to take this year! So to the kids picked their pumpkins and then it was time to help daddy pick a couple big ones that he plans to "rotozip"!! Once we were all done picking out pumpkins, we headed home. The kids got to paint their small pumpkins and then the eyes, nose, and mouths for their pumpkin craft!

So yes, once again another busy Craft Saturday!

Fall Garden Is Up And Growing...

I am finally happy to report that Marc finally got around to getting the garden started for fall crops! He so far has planted broccoli, squash, tomatoes, cauliflower, green beans, and lettuce! He still have our jalepenos growing big and strong along with my gigantic basil plant. I have been picking and using it but it just grows so fast.
When I told him I would blog about the new fall crops he INSISTED I take pictures!! He is so proud of his hard work, as he should be! He can take full credit for any and all success we have with our garden and composter!

Why Is My Boy A Picky Eater...

My boy intrigues me when it comes to meals! He is my ONLY picky eater! The girls eat pretty much anything! I am a pretty good cook. I don't make overly crazy meals! So why will my boy not eat most of what I make? He was an awesome eater as a baby, actually the best eater out of all the kids so far. I REFUSE to make him a seperate meal and lately he has been testing his boundries in hopes that Marc or I will crack and give him his beloved turkey bologna (which I SWEAR he would live on if we let him)! So as I sit here bored (I know me bored with spare time??!!) on the couch waiting for Marc to finish his video game I decided to google why kids are picky eaters and here is what I found...

Children's nutrition: 20 tips for picky eaters

Is your child a picky eater? Use these practical tips to avoid mealtime battles.
Your preschooler has refused to eat anything other than peanut butter sandwiches for the past two days, and your toddler would rather play than eat anything at all. Sound familiar?
If children's nutrition is a sore topic in your household, you're not alone. Many parents are distressed by what their children eat — or don't eat. However, most kids get plenty of variety and nutrition in their diets over the course of a week. Until your child's food preferences mature, prevent mealtime battles one bite at a time.

1. Respect your child's hunger — or lack thereof. Young children tend to eat only when they're hungry. If your child isn't hungry, don't force a meal or snack.
Stay calm. If your child senses that you're unhappy with his or her eating habits, it may become a battle of wills. Threats and punishments only reinforce the power struggle.
2. Keep an eye on the clock. Nix juice and snacks for at least one hour before meals. If your child comes to the table hungry, he or she may be more motivated to eat.
3. Don't expect too much. After age 2, slower growth often reduces a child's appetite. A few bites may be all it takes for your child to feel full.
4. Limit liquid calories. Low-fat or fat-free dairy products and 100 percent fruit juice can be important parts of a healthy diet — but if your child fills up on milk or juice, he or she may have no room for meals or snacks.
5. Start small. Offer several foods in small portions. Let your child choose what he or she eats.
6. Boycott the clean plate club. Don't force your child to clean his or her plate. This may only ignite — or reinforce — a power struggle over food. Instead, allow your child to stop eating when he or she is full.
7. Leave taste out of it. Talk about a food's color, shape, aroma and texture — not whether it tastes good.
8. Be patient with new foods. Young children often touch or smell new foods, and may even put tiny bits in their mouths and then take them back out again. Your child may need repeated exposure to a new food before he or she takes the first bite.
9. Eat breakfast for dinner. Who says cereal or pancakes are only for breakfast? The distinction between breakfast, lunch and dinner foods may be lost on your child.
10. Make it fun. Serve broccoli and other veggies with a favorite dip or sauce. Cut foods into various shapes with cookie cutters.
11. Recruit your child's help. At the grocery store, ask your child to help you select fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods. Don't buy anything that you don't want your child to eat. At home, encourage your child to help you rinse veggies, stir batter or set the table.
12. Set a good example. If you eat a variety of healthy foods, your child is more likely to follow suit.
13. Be sneaky. Add chopped broccoli or green peppers to spaghetti sauce, top cereal with fruit slices, or mix grated zucchini and carrots into casseroles and soups.
14. Keep it separate. If your child isn't a fan of various ingredients thrown together, you might "unmix" the food. Place sandwich fixings outside the bread, or serve the ingredients of a salad, casserole or stir-fry separately.
15. Stick to the routine. Serve meals and snacks at about the same times every day. If the kitchen is closed at other times, your child may be more likely to eat what's served for meals and snacks.
16. Minimize distractions. Turn off the television during meals, and don't allow books or toys at the table.
17. Don't offer dessert as a reward. Withholding dessert sends the message that dessert is the best food, which may only increase your child's desire for sweets. You might select one or two nights a week as dessert nights, and skip dessert the rest of the week. Or redefine dessert as fruit, yogurt or other healthy choices.
18. Expect some food preferences to stick. As kids mature, they tend to become less picky about food. Still, everyone has food preferences. Don't expect your child to like everything.
19. Know when to seek help. If your child is energetic and growing, he or she is probably doing fine.

20. Know when to seek help. If your child is energetic and growing, he or she is probably doing fine. Consult your child's doctor if you're concerned that picky eating is compromising your child's growth and development or if certain foods seem to make your child ill.
Your child's eating habits won't likely change overnight. But the small steps you take each day can help promote a lifetime of healthy eating.

So after reading this, I thought to myself "we already have tried these so the only thing that gives me hope is time". Time that will hopefully bring a more open willing appetite!

A Full Saturday...

With Christmas time quickly approaching Marc and I want to make sure that on his 1 day off a week we have a nice fun family day. Yesterday (Saturday) was his 1 day off, so first on the list was putting up Liliana's chair rail in her new bedroom. Liliana has been bugging him all week long and its such a small room that it wasn't going to take him all that long. Ava decided she wanted to help. She even got to use the nail gun!!

While Ava and Daddy were doing the chair rail, I decided it was time to teach Liliana how to use my old sewing machine! She decided she wanted to use up some of the leftover butterfly fabric from Ava's diapers and make a pillow to match the butterflies in her bedroom! She did pretty darn good considering the foot pedal has ZERO speed control!

Once the chair rail and pillow were completed, Marc decided to take Liliana's training wheels off her bike. Its been something he has been trying to do for a few weekends now. Liliana for some reason has been in NO RUSH to learn how to ride on two wheels! So after about an hours worth of time out in front of the house.... Liliana can now ride on two wheels! She sadly is still a little too fearful to ride around the neighborhood because "the sidewalks are too small"! So after she was done riding her bike, Marc took the younger two on a bike ride! Dillon LOVES his bike! He got it back in May for his birthday and has been unhappy that the desert weather has kept him from riding during the past few months! Finally the weather started to cool off but unfortunately I can't ride my bike while preggo and Marc's work schedule hasn't been the best for fitting a bike ride in! So needless to say Dillon was beyond excited to take such a nice long bike ride with his dad!

As if all this wasn't enough to tire Marc and I out, the day was only half way gone!! The rest of the afternoon consisted of lunch, naps, and normal sibling playtime! After dinner we decided it was a good night to have Grandma and Papa come over to watch Indiana Jones. The kids LOVE when we do movie night! Of course Grandma and Papa came over. They sometimes will call us asking if we have any new movies to watch! Its quite fun to watch a movie in the movie room (even for the adults)! Movie night is NEVER complete without the popcorn machine and candy! So Marc fired up the popcorn machine and Dillon decided he wanted to be the helper! He was so darn funny. He had his face plastered against the machine as it popped! Marc then got the kids' bags of candy ready! Boy he must have been in a good mood cause these bags were FULL of teeth rotting yummies! Once the popcorn and candy bags were ready to be handed out the kids took their seats and started to snack while the movie loaded! Soon after taking a seat the movie started! I was shocked... ALL 3 kids stayed awake the entire movie (which didn't end until 9:15pm and they normally are out by 8pm every night)!

Wondering how tired Marc and I were after this long day?? We put the kids right to bed after the movie and both fell asleep shortly after!!

A Weeks Worth of Hard Work...

So as most of you know I decided to switch around the kids bedrooms BEFORE Garrison arrives. I originally was gonna wait until after he arrived but the more organizing of the upstairs I did the more I realized what a task that would be and how hard it would be to execute with a newborn baby to care for. So last week the kids and I went to Ikea. We needed to buy a couple extra pieces of furniture to make this switch a complete success! For those of you that have never been to my house physically heres how it WAS set up.

Dillon had his own room.

The girls shared a room.

Then there was a guest bedroom.

My plan to keep all fair was to put Garrison in with Dillon. The problem with this plan... Dillon's room AND the guest bedroom are both far too small of rooms to put a crib AND dresser AND twin bed in. Realistically the girls should have their own rooms and our guest room has been used only a handful of times (seeing as most of our family live close by)! So my master plan was to give the girls each their own room and put the boys in the old girls room. Yes this meant painting all 3 rooms, switching around furniture, putting together new furniture, and redecorating (of course on a budget)! The kids were very excited for this new change but obviously it wasn't going to happen overnight. But as you all know, when I want something done I do it until it gets done!! So I am proud to say that after 7 long hard days of work I have finished all 3 bedrooms minus the little finishing touches (extra wall decor, a couple curtains still left to sew, things like that)

Liliana decided she wanted butterflies in her room. I would NOT let her do a specific theme (like hannah montana) since she will probably be over it sooner than later and then I would be stuck changing her room AGAIN! The butterflies are very simple. A few stickers that are easily removable, a custom bedskirt with a few shimmery butterflies sewn on (which I can take off just as easily), custom curtains that I am still working on, and wall art I plan on painting sometime next week. She also got 2 new dressers and a nightstand to match her bed. Oh and she decided she wanted a two tone wall with a chair rail (I swear her idea not mine it was on the box of butterfly stickers that we bought) so Marc has to put that up this weekend!

Ava decided she wanted to keep all the princess decor from the girls' old room. So that was pretty easy. We kept the furniture that Dillon had in the same room and just gave it all to Ava. To make use of the leftover paint from Liliana's room we painted 2 walls pink and the other 2 white. I updated our (stupid) octagon shaped window cover. I call it stupid because who wants an octagon shaped window?? Luckily my crafty father-in-law made me a custom frame to cover with fabric since its far too expensive to have someone come and put something custom in it. I made her cute little curtains out of princess fabric that matches her bedding and octagon window. I think she is overwhelmed by the fact that this is HER new room.

Then came Dillon's room ... Marc had to put together his new bed frame that we bought to match Liliana's old dressers. We bought the new bed frame because the one we had was HUGE (it seriously took up an extra 15 inches of floor space which we need)! After getting the dressers and bed set up we moved the crib in. Its the perfect amount of space for the two boys. Dillon's old room had the same exact window dimensions as his new room's window so the window covering was the easiest part of the room switch! His wall decor was pretty easy as well since this was a bigger room where I could spread out all he wanted up on the walls. Oh and of course I had to make Garrison's crib bedding since Dillon wanted him to have "Cars" on it!

All the rooms are less cramped and have the perfect amount of dresser space (which was becoming a bit of an issue when it came to space)! Dillon has the queen bed so if someone comes to stay with us there is still a decent size bed to sleep in. If you are wondering how Liliana feels about Dillon getting the biggest bed out of the 3 kids... well she was not happy about it but then we reminded her that she has her OWN room where as Dillon has to share a room with Garrison! She was content with that answer... thank goodness!! The best part was after I finished all the rooms, Marc looked at me and asked me if he should move the movie room upstairs to the loft or make another bedroom out of the it and leave the movie room downstairs??!! I just looked at him and gave him "THAT LOOK"! Then said "NO MORE MOVING OF ROOMS!" Can you blame me??
So as you can see alot got done in only a weeks worth of time and the kids are all super happy with the new bedroom arrangements! Now lets hope that Marc's job doesn't want us to move anytime in the near future!! Knowing my luck I just jinxed ourselves!!
